Our Mission

We are volunteers professionally trained as Master Gardeners who help members of our community achieve their gardening goals. Dedicated to Fauquier and Rappahannock counties, we educate with science-based programs, demonstrate sustainable gardening practices, and respect nature.

About Us

Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners are volunteer educators who provide the public with gardening information that draws on the horticultural research and experience of Virginia Tech and Virginia State University. We help members of our community achieve their gardening goals. Dedicated to Fauquier and Rappahannock counties, we educate with science-based programs, demonstrate sustainable gardening practices and respect nature.

Master Gardeners volunteer thousands of hours each year to…

» Answer gardening questions in the Extension office and at local Farmers Markets.
Our Help Desk function is available to residents to drop off plants for examination, submit questions by phone, or through the website.

» Conduct home visits and assessments for lawn care with a goal of improving water quality through the “Green” Grass program.

» Provide home consultations for wildlife habitat improvement with the Audubon at Home team members.

» Teach and host a wide range of free gardening events and workshops with expert presenters through hands-on sessions, and virtual training.

» Conduct a variety of programing for youth in schools that focuses on soils, plant life cycles, horticulture production, and healthy eating.

» Showcase sustainable gardening practices through Demonstration Gardens – open to all to visit and explore.

» Collaborate with partners to support healthy food choice and food security efforts.
